The disposal of organic waste in sanitary landfills generates polluting gases to the atmosphere. Anaerobic bacteria degrade these materials and produce a mixture of gases, among which methane and carbon dioxide stand out. These gases can be burned in boilers or engines, serving as a replacement or supplement to fossil fuels for the generation of electricity and heat.

Currently, the commune of Popeta disposes of all its municipal waste in the Popeta Municipal Landfill, a final disposal site located 19 kilometers away from the center of Melipilla. This landfill is about to complete its lifecycle, therefore, the municipality is managing its expansion to operate as a sanitary landfill.

The Program is working in conjunction with the Municipality of Melipilla and the Regional Undersecretary of Environment of the Metropolitan Region [Seremi, for its Spanish acronym], providing technical advice on the recovery of biogas in the old landfill and also on the expansion of the landfill.

This project expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 525,571 (tons CO2-eq) during the period 2021 – 2036.

La Hormiga

Reciclo Orgánicos Program signed a collaboration agreement with the company GEA to generate electricity from biogas at La Hormiga Landfill in the San Felipe commune.

This project expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 684,250 (tons CO2-eq) during the 2020-2040 period.

Copiulemu

Reciclo Orgánicos signed a collaboration agreement with ENC Energy for the project to generate electricity from biogas at the Copiulemu Landfill, in the commune of Florida. Upon completion of the pilot project in 2020, project data from the Copiulemu Landfill gas capture facility will be measured, reported and verified (MRV) in real time through an online platform.

It is expected that during the 2019-2040 period, this project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 860,209 (tons CO2-eq).

Bioenergía Los Pinos

Reciclo Orgánicos signed a collaboration agreement with Bioenergía Los Pinos in order to collaborate in the operation of a power generation plant, for the processing of gas from the CEMARC Sanitary Landfill, located in the commune of Florida, in the Biobío Region.

It is expected that during the 2020-2040 period, this project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2,361,127 (tons CO2-eq).
