    Municipal Waste generated in Chile

    In 2015, 56% of all municipalities, corresponding to 73.8% of the population of Chile, declared generate 5.658.198 tonnes of waste.

    Emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) in Chile

    The waste sector contributes to the generation of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions as a result of microbiological processes that occur in the organic matter on solid waste under anaerobic degradation and anaerobic treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater, accounted for 3.7% of the GHG balance in 2013.

    Landfills in Chile

    By 2016, Chile has a total of 38 landfills for final disposal of waste. The number of landfills has increased in recent years from 25 in 2014 to 38 in 2016.

    Daily municipal waste in Chile

    In Chile, every day, a person generates 1.25 kg of waste. Of this, about 50% is organic waste.

    Public Perception

    According to the latest survey of the Ministry of Environment in Chile, 29% of Chilean people are concerned with waste management and is the second biggest environmental concern in Chile.

    The Program

    Environment and Climate Change Canada, under the Canada-Chile Agreement on Environmental Cooperation has committed to support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the waste sector in Chile.

    Reciclo Orgánicos program will include a strong component of stakeholder participation and will consist of: designing and enabling the separation of organic sources by building the appropriate infrastructure and training municipal staff through workshops and awareness-raising in all communities, including schools and Institutions.
